Freedom House recently sponsored the visit of Beatrice Mtetwa, a renowned lawyer from Zimbabwe and recipient of the 2010 International Human Rights Award.
On August 16, 2010, the anti-TIP (Trafficking In Persons) network, which Freedom House assisted in creating as part of its “Actions to Combat Human Trafficking in Guatemala” project, held a press conference with representatives from all 18 member organizations to urge the national government to fully employ the existing legal framework for prosecution of trafficking crimes and protection of victims by providing adequate funding and resources to the Ministry of Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking (SVET).
As part of its ongoing effort to support human rights activists across Sub Saharan Africa in their struggle for the defense and promotion of human rights and basic freedoms, Freedom House sponsored and facilitated the first strategic meeting of the newly formed Central African Human Rights Defenders Network (REDHAC) in July 2010.
Freedom House recently helped to organize a briefing on the human rights situation in Chechnya, hosted by the Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe, entitled “In the Eye of the Storm: Chechnya and the Mounting Violence in the North Caucasus.”
