Freedom House welcomes the arrest of Laurent Gbagbo and hopes that it will put an end to the violence that has besieged Côte d’Ivoire and claimed hundreds of civilian lives.

While the world’s attention has been focused on Libya, the humanitarian crisis in Côte d’Ivoire has reached devastating proportions and requires a strong and concerted international response. Freedom House today echoes the call of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the United Nations Security Council to intervene on behalf of the people of Côte d’Ivoire and take necessary measures to assist in the immediate removal of Laurent Gbagbo, including through military action if necessary.

Freedom House strongly condemns the refusal of Côte d’Ivoire’s Laurent Gbagbo to accept an African Union panel’s recommendation that he turn over power to Alassane Ouattara, the legitimate winner of last November’s election.

Freedom House today called into question the African Union’s decision to appoint the presidents of Chad and Mauritania to a panel tasked with solving the current leadership crisis in Côte d’Ivoire.

Worst of the Worst 2011: The World's Most Repressive Societies

Freedom House has prepared this special report entitled Worst of the Worst: The World’s Most Repressive Societies, as a companion to its annual survey on the state of global political rights and civil liberties, Freedom in the World. The special report provides summary country reports, tables, and graphical information on the countries that receive the lowest combined ratings for political rights and civil liberties in Freedom in the World, and whose citizens endure systematic and pervasive human rights violations.

Worst of the Worst 2007

Sudan, North Korea and Uzbekistan are prominent among the most repressive regimes in the world, according to a report released by Freedom House.  The study, “The Worst of the Worst: The World's Most Repressive Societies 2007,” named seventeen countries with the worst records for political rights and civil liberties, and pointed to thirteen countries which have been on the list for five years or more.
