The Global State of Workers’ Rights: Free Labor in a Hostile World

August 26, 2010 | PDF Version | HTML Version

On August 31, 2010, Freedom House released The Global State of Workers’ Rights: Free Labor in a Hostile World, an assessment of trade union and worker freedoms in 165 countries. According to the findings of this first-of-its-kind report, one-third of the global population lives in societies in which workers’ rights suffer a significant degree of repression. The report found substantial problems in every region of the world except Western Europe, with the most serious abuses occurring in the Middle East and the former Soviet Union. Fourteen countries received the lowest rating of Very Repressive, including Belarus, Burma, Cuba, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Vietnam.

This report contains an analysis of regional trends in threats to the exercise of freedom of expression in the Andean region. The report was presented to the Interamerican Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in a public hearing on March 23, 2010 in Washington, DC during the IACHR’s 138th session on behalf of the Institute for Legal Defense (IDL), the Center for Law and Society (Cides), the Development and Justice Consortium of Venezuela and Freedom House.  The group requested that the IACHR and, in particular the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, incorporate the findings presented in their own statements and reports.

June 3, 2010 | PDF Version

Massive human rights violations take place in nearly every region of the world. This year’s roster of the "worst of the worst" includes countries from the Americas, the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, and East Asia; they represent a wide array of cultures and levels of economic development. This report focuses on states and territories that have seen some of the world’s most severe repression and most systematic and brutal abuses of human dignity. It seeks to focus the attention of the United Nations Human Rights Council on states and territories that deserve investigation and condemnation for their widespread violations.
