In early 2011, as the winds of political change swept throughout North Africa, Sudanese democracy activists faced a severe crackdown after several protests took place in January and February. These actions come at a time when the Bashir government successfully disbanded the few human rights organizations and lawyers’ networks and forced into exile many of the activists that documented such abuses. In an attempt to address this gap and to promote respect for human rights in Sudan, Freedom House is working on ensuring continuous monitoring of human rights abuses in Sudan and supports domestic, regional and international advocacy activities for adherence to international human rights commitments.
