The United States-ASEAN Symposium on the ASEAN Declaration on Human Rights

Following the adoption of the ASEAN Charter in 2008, ASEAN created the Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in late 2009. AICHR has been charged with the challenging task of drawing up an “ASEAN Declaration on Human Rights,” one that represents a definition of human rights acceptable to member countries with widely divergent political systems and governing philosophies. This Declaration is anticipated to be approved and released at the ASEAN Leaders Summit on November 19-20 in Cambodia.  Featuring representatives from AICHR, the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), and prominent NGO leaders from Southeast Asia and Washington, D.C. who specialize in human rights, the Symposium will provide valuable insights into the increasingly vibrant human rights colloquy now taking place within ASEAN.
