Freedom House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through research, effective advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists. We are a leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded analytic reports, including Freedom in the World, Freedom of the Press, Freedom on the Net, and Nations in Transit. Position Summary
The Intern will provide research, editorial, production, and administrative support to the project director and editors of the Freedom of the Press project. The intern will primarily assist with production of the Freedom of the Press 2013 index, as well as engaging in other related advocacy and outreach efforts. The internship is paid, and we would like the intern to be able to work between 30-40 hours per week with a commitment of at least six months. This position reports to the Project Director for Freedom of the Press.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree or graduate school experience may be necessary for the level of research needed
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
- Demonstrated experience conducting internet research through search engines such as LexisNexis
- Background or interest in international affairs and human rights required; interest in and familiarity with media, journalism, and press freedom issues preferred
Some Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct internet-based research on topics relevant to our media freedom and freedom of expression work
- Prepare written summaries of materials gathered through research
- Proofread, fact-check, and edit documents for relevance and accuracy
- Assist with research, writing, and editing of country reports for our 2013 index
- Assist with the development of materials for ratings review meetings, presentations for conferences, press releases, and other special reports or projects as needed
