Eurasia Intern

Freedom House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through research, effective advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists.  We are a leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded analytic reports, including Freedom in the World, Freedom of the Press, Freedom on the Net, and Nations in Transit.  With 13 field offices and two U.S. offices, we support the right of every individual to be free.

Position Summary
The Intern will assist with logistical, research, and administrative support for Eurasia programs. She/he will have the opportunity to gain experience in administration and logistics of program implementation, research, fundraising, and outreach to advance democracy and human rights across Eurasia, a region that remains one of the world’s most repressive. This is a Part-time 30 hours per week; temporary 4 months internship and reports to the Director for Eurasia programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, some Master’s work preferred (international relations, human rights, law, international economics, Russian language)
  • Some experience in program management including reporting ability and knowledge of funder account requirements, including exchange programs and cost share requirements
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Russian is preferred
  • Experience working on issues pertaining to the Eurasia
  • Experience with budget planning and financial analysis
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support program officers in work with field offices in the region with program-related as well as financial and administrative needs.
  • Support regular communications with field-based employees of Freedom House and facilitate communication between them and different departments at headquarters.
  • Support proposal writing activities
  • Help with budget planning and analysis
  • Help draft narrative reports to funders
  • Monitor news and events in the region pertaining to human rights, democracy and fundamental freedoms and identify opportunities and challenges
  • Support outreach on human rights issues concerning the region
  • Help with program compliance with Freedom House and donor financial and administrative guidelines.
  • Help design and oversee programs in the region and manage their budgets
  • Cover Washington DC-based events pertaining to the region
  • Participate as a member of the Eurasia team in all action, analysis and advocacy activities pertaining to the region
