Inherited cultural norms combined with structural issues such as a lack of rule of law cause women to be marginalized in Egypt and other Muslim countries, observed Freedom House Egypt Project Director Nancy Okail at a panel discussion hosted by the Women’s Foreign Policy Group on November 16. Okail was joined by Freedom House board member Zainab Al-Suwaij and Tassmine ElSayed Hani from Al-Akhbar Daily Newspaper. They discussed “How Have Women’s Political Rights Fared in Egypt,” focusing on recent changes under the new government.
