“We Need to Know” Coalition Calls for Government Transparency on Surveillance
July 26, 2013
Freedom House has joined a coalition of free speech and privacy advocates, trade associations, and internet companies in demanding greater transparency around national security-related surveillance of internet and telephone communications. In an open letter to US government officials, the "We Need to Know" coalition urges the U.S. government to allow companies to publish statistics on the requests for user data they have received from authorities. The coalition also calls on the U.S. government, in accordance with the principles of transparency and accountability, to provide the public with basic information on how these surveillance activities are conducted, and for the government to ensure that civil liberties and human rights are being protected.
