Ukraine’s Fragile Democracy Heading in the Wrong Direction

Under Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine is on a path toward kleptocracy and autocracy, said David Kramer at a July 19 event hosted by Freedom House. Robert Nurick of the Atlantic Council stressed the importance of the fall elections as a bellwether of Ukraine’s democratic health, and expressed concern over party consolidation, which has tilted the playing field against independent candidates.
