Press Freedom Survey Findings Presented In Chile

Freedom House presented the Freedom of the Press 2012 survey on May 31st, at Alberto Hurtado University in Santiago, Chile. Viviana Giacaman, director for Latin America programs, discussed Freedom House’s concerns over the rapid deterioration of press freedom in the region. This year, Freedom House downgraded Chile from the “Free” to the “Partly Free” category due to police repression against journalists during street demonstrations. Giacaman also explained the dramatic decline of the press freedom situation in Ecuador, which is only a few points away from being considered “Not Free,” along with Cuba, Honduras, Mexico and Venezuela.
