Freedom House condemns the assassination of Chokri Belaid and sends its deepest condolences to his family. Tunisian authorities should take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Chokri Belaid, a Tunisian lawyer and a leading member of a leftist alliance of parties known as the Popular Front, was shot three times as he was leaving his house in the capital of Tunis on February 6. Thousands of people quickly gathered in the heart of the capital to protest in front of the Interior Ministry, the same site where anti-government protests were held two years ago that eventually toppled Tunisia's long-time dictator, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.
