Farai Maguwu: Abuses Continue in Zimbabwe’s Diamond Fields

Award-winning activist Farai Maguwu, in a discussion at Freedom House on June 7, highlighted the ongoing human rights abuses in Zimbabwe’s Marange diamond fields and the lack of transparency in the mining contracts. Zimbabwe’s state treasury, he noted, is receiving only a fraction of the revenues it should be getting from mining companies. Fellow activists Shamiso Mtisi and Tor-Hugne Olsen, who also spoke at the event, are pressing for legal reforms and improved Kimberley Process engagement to bring transparency to the diamond industry in Zimbabwe.
