Delegation to IGF Calls for Protection of Free Expression Online

Activists and independent journalists from Southeast Asia stressed the importance of protecting rights online at the annual Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) in Tokyo, Japan. Freedom House partnered with regional civil society groups to host two interactive sessions on July 19-20, which discussed civil society’s role in internet governance, particularly the need for multi-stakeholder participation in policy forums, and examined ways to defend free expression in cyberspace. Activists refuted the idea of “Asian values,” which de-emphasize individual liberties.
