Activists From Chechnya Raise Awareness About Abuses
Freedom House recently helped to organize a briefing on the human rights situation in Chechnya, hosted by the Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe, entitled “In the Eye of the Storm: Chechnya and the Mounting Violence in the North Caucasus.” The American Committee for Peace in the Caucasus, a project of Freedom House, invited two human rights experts on Chechnya, Mr. Igor Kalyapin and Ms. Elena Milashina, and a victim of human rights abuses, Mrs. Raisa Turlueva, to testify at the hearing. Their compelling, personal testimonies not only gave a firsthand account of the rights abuses and climate of fear that persist in Chechnya and the neighboring republics, but served as a call to action for the U.S. government to urge the Russian authorities to take appropriate steps to end the harassment, persecution and attacks against activists in the North Caucasus.
